Welcome to the New York Association for Blind Athletes Website
The New York Association for Blind Athletes (NYABA) was formed as a result of the International Games for the Disabled (now called the Paralympics). These Games were played in 1984 on Long Island N.Y. NYABA became an affiliated chapter of the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) in 1985.
Our organization provides to both the blind and visually impaired, athletic support at the local, state, national and international level of competition in sports (track & field, goalball, wrestling, judo & swimming.) The athletes compete at both blind and sighted competitions.
While training locally and regionally, the athletes qualify to attend National competition. It is during the regional and national competitions that athletes display their talents to USABA coaches and staff. This begins the process of being chosen to represent NYABA at national and international events. Since 1985, NYABA athletes have represented the United States at the Paralympics, World Championships and other international events.
The cost to practice and compete in any of these sports on a local, regional, national or international level falls mostly on the athlete. This expense can only be offset through generous contributions from people like you.
Some of our NYABA athletes have excelled over the years to the elite athlete level. Without your support, these athletes would never have been able to see their dreams come true, to be on the medal stand and hear our National Anthem played.
